What is the current structure of the certification schema?
Let us first look at the ITIL 4 Certification scheme from which the various designations, including the ITIL 4 Master Designation, are derived.
The current structure of the ITIL 4 Certification is based on the following:
- At the bottom of the structure is the ITIL 4 Foundation certification, which is a pre-requisite for all other ITIL Certifications (except two extension modules).
- The next level is viewed from the prism of 3 main pillars of ITIL, grouped around the applications / target audience of the courses. There are 3 main designations which a professional can aspire to:
- ITIL 4 Practice Manager
- ITIL 4 Managing Professional
- ITIL 4 Strategic Leader
- Once a Service Management Professional has achieved all 3 designations, they can claim the coveted designation of ITIL 4 Master.
What is the Practice Manager Designation?
This designation demonstrates that the Service Management Professional has the practical and technical knowledge on how to work within, operate, and implement successful IT and digital-enabled services, teams, and workflows.
To achieve the ITIL 4 Practice Manager designation, you will need to have completed either:
- One of 3 ITIL 4 Specialist Modules: MSF (Monitor Support Fulfil), PIC (Plan Implement Control), or CAI (Collaborate, Assure Improve)
- Or any 5 of the Individual Practitioner Modules (there are 15 of them).
What is The Managing Professional Designation?
The Managing Professional (MP) stream provides practical and technical knowledge about how to run successful IT-enabled services, teams, and workflows.
The four modules to be covered to achieve this designation are:
- ITIL 4 Specialist: Create, Deliver and Support
- ITIL 4 Specialist: Drive Stakeholder Value
- ITIL 4 Specialist: High-velocity IT
- ITIL 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve
What is a Strategic Leader Designation?
The ITIL Strategic Leader Designation recognizes the value of ITIL, not just for IT operations, but for all digitally-enabled services. Becoming an ITIL 4 Strategic Leader demonstrates that you have a clear understanding of how IT influences and directs business strategy.
The two modules to be covered to achieve this designation are:
- ITIL 4 Strategist: Direct, Plan and Improve
- ITIL 4 Leader: Digital and IT Strategy
Any Service Management Professional holding all three designations will automatically receive the designation of the coveted "ITIL® 4 Master".
